When you purchase an SSL certificate you must specify the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) you want the certificate for. The FQDN of 'www.example.com' is NOT the same as 'example.com'. In the former case you would go to 'https://www.example.com' and in the latter you would go to 'https://example.com'.

You must ensure you specific the correct FQDN when purchasing an SSL certificate.

Example of a common mistake:

Customer wants an SSL certificate for his ecommerce site at 'www.example.com'. Customer purchases an SSL certificate for 'example.com'. After the certificate is installed the customer goes to 'https://www.example.com' and receives a popup (IE) that says "The name on the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site"....."Do you want to proceed?"
